Help for Homeschool
We can all agree that no one has the perfect answer for the 2020-2021 school year. There are so many options and none of them feel perfectly right for every family.
Many people are choosing to homeschool and that could be one of the bravest decisions you've made this year! Bravo!
You've picked your curriculum and chosen a part of the kitchen table dedicated to math, reading and history. But did you know you can add a horse as a co-teacher for your kids?
The horses at Starting Gate will add in valuable lessons your kids need this year. More than ever before the things a horse can teach us are vital!
Homeschoolers during the classroom portion of a Starting Gate program.
Horses are non judgmental. They don't care what clothes we wear, what curriculum we've chosen, or what kind of car we drive. All they care about is how we make them feel. They give 100% honest feedback about the dynamics of the team working with them. Their feedback is immediate which gives valuable learning moments for the team. Our typical program meets once a week for 12 weeks with each program building on the previous weeks lesson. This program can also be customized for 4, 6, 8 or the full 12 weeks.
There is no horse experience necessary for a student to participate in the programs at Starting Gate. We focus less on 'horse skills' and more on the things listed below. We work in teams of siblings, parents and children, or small groups of multiple families. The horses are the teachers in these conversations so we don't ride them. The students work with the horses side by side on the ground.
Starting Gate programs will add to your homeschool curriculum by adding these valuable lessons:
Building Relationships - We explore how a horse can teach us how to build a safe relationship built on trust, respect and fun with people we encounter in our everyday lives.
Communication - horses are experts at communication. They need to be to survive! These amazing teachers bring out many styles of communication and help us practice in a nonjudgemental environment.
Listening and Articulation - Ever find yourself repeating the same thing over and over before finally asking "Are you even listening?" A horse can help with that.
Problem Solving - a bit of creativity never hurt! In this program we practice our skills in problem solving and gain skill used everyday outside of the arena.
Focus - horses can see almost 360 degrees around them but they are very focused on the thing in front of them. We work with them to learn how to hone our own focus even better.
Negotiation - this tactic might seem like its only needed in business, but a horse can show us how we use negotiation everyday so that we can all find win-win solutions to life problems.
Trust - Quite possibly one of the most important skills to learn. When, who and how do we trust appropriately?
Teamwork and leadership - Your student will learn what it truly means to be a leader!
Safety is our number one priority at Starting Gate. The first thing your student will learn is safe handling of their horsey teammate. The horses are continually worked with to ensure their attitude and respect are appropriate and safe for working with your family.
This is also a unique year with a new level of safety needed. For the 2020 and possibly beyond seasons - all programs including classroom time will be held outside. Our indoor classroom (similar to the one pictured above. Note -that photo is from a previous location we rented) is available for emergency shelter. Equipment will be sterilized between programs. There are no restrooms available - but programs are only 90 minutes in length. No snacks are provided and participants are encouraged to bring their own water. All programs have a minimum age requirement of 8 years old.
Masks are not required (we are outdoors and in compliance with current directed health measures) but you do of course have the choice to wear one if you like.
